
It's like we're all sleep deprived, all the time.
That's the conclusion I draw from this Times article about information overload. I even had a hard time reading the whole thing, I was so distracted by the accompanying article teasers and advertisements (Ten amazing facts about my brain! Gotta read that.)
But buried 23 inches down is this: Information overload can create a compromised mental state called CPA, for "continual partial attention." The kind of habitual multi-tasking that creates this state can reduce your IQ, according to a University of London study. "Simply being in a situation where you can text and e-mail can knock ten IQ points off your brain--an effect similar to losing a night's sleep," says the article.
Ha!
So, I like the timeout approach recommended in the article: Just take a pause. Slow down and turn it off for an hour, a moment, a day. I think, like everything, practice begets habits begets abilities. Also, as always, I like the full night's sleep approach too.
