Beginnings

How does your day start?

This image is from an interesting story in the NYT about how online technology has changed mornings for many families.

With my new job and its (relatively) flex schedule, I've found it a revelation to spend some time playing with my son and having coffee with my husband in the morning. I can't say I ever have made a habit of getting my days going early, but I almost always have started my days in a frenzy of rush, rush, rush--no time for civility.

It is a lot nicer the more civil way, I say.

Propofol as a sleep aid?

More news on the "sleep aid" Michael Jackson was taking at his home. Did you see this today in the New York Times?

Depressing. And frightening. And, regarding Michael Jackson's story, raises more questions on what in the world he and his doctor were doing.

This is your (sad, creepy) quote of the day, from the NYT article:
"Using propofol as a home sleep aid would be 'kind of like me using chemotherapy so I don’t have to shave my head. You'd never do that.'"
--Dr. John F. Dombrowski, director of the Washington Pain Center and a board member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists

On the job

"Take 20!"

The recent Pew study about napping, among other things, has gotten even the NYT worked up. A teaser from yesterday's ed page is your quote for the day:

"Why is it easier to find a coffee machine in the office than a spot for a doze? Perhaps the simplest answer is that sleep is so relentlessly personal. We are never more who we really are than when sound asleep."

What other people say about sleep

“Zzz!”

This is quote week on Shuteye Daily. And we're starting with a heavy hitter:

"Sleeping is no mean art: for its sake one must stay awake all day."
--Friedrich Nietzsche
